Hi, it’s Eliana!
🦋 🦋 🦋 Happy May! 🦋🦋🦋
Introducing this month’s guest editor, Dr. Anjelica Martinez!
Anjelica, but friends call me Anj 😊✨💕
A pic of yours truly post-SPSP 2025.
My baby boy, Sonny. He is also a Texas native picked up from the streets of San Antonio.
about me
Hey ya’ll!
I’m a Texas native born in El Paso and raised in San Antonio, Texas. I now live in Houston, Texas. I defended my dissertation (!!!) in April at the University of Houston’s Social Psychology program under the direction of Dr. C. Raymond Knee and the Self, Motivation, and Relationship Theories Lab. Previously, I got my MS at the University of Texas at San Antonio. My research interests include how we can use motivation theories to understand familial (or other close relationships) expectations/cultural values as antecedents to health outcomes. I am generally interested in investigating social determinants of health and how our values and belief systems help or hinder us from engaging in certain health behaviors. While my work is largely quantitative, I am beginning to dabble in qualitative and mixed methodologies. I do some work in the media psychology realm as well, such as investigating our motivations for using social media/smart phones and the hazards of compulsive use.
I am now transitioning into a research analyst position with the Kinder Institute of Urban Research team, where I will continue serving the Houston community, especially Latino Americans – it feels like a dream come true!
Outside of work, I am a huge plant lady. I dream of owning a greenhouse to grow all types of tropical plants. I have also begun experimenting (very poorly) with herbs and peppers. Unfortunately, I have killed a few soldiers along the way. I also enjoy working out at the local gym, jogging at an embarrassingly slow pace on the treadmill, walking Sonny, doing hot yoga, pilates, and strength training. On the weekends, I enjoy attending live music events by EDM artists. Some recent shows I’ve been to include San Holo, RL Grime, and Zedd! I love drinking tea, doing jigsaw puzzles, and making homemade seasonings with my herbs.
Behold my bountiful jalepeño harvest.
📚reading :
I haven’t read a book in a minute, but I am big into historical non-fiction. Did you know Galveston was supposed to be what Houston is like today? Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson is a fantastic book for history buffs looking for a deep dive into the early 1900s hurricane that indirectly contributed to the development of the huge city known as Houston today.
🎧 listening:
Tú con él by Rauw Alejandro and Fantasmas by Humbl have been my go-to workout songs. Two very different vibes, I know, but sooo good to sing along to on the treadmill.
Honorable Mentions ✨:
Beso (Fruta Fresca) – Wakyin
Lionness – Swedish House Mafia
We Are Mirage – Eric Prdz & Empire of the Sun
🧠reflecting :
Thinking back, my research interests and who I am as a person have changed a lot since the beginning of my graduate school career. It’s a bit surreal of a feeling to stand here and look back, but, let’s be real, graduate school is HARD. Writing manuscripts is HARD. Teaching is HARD. As much as I loved my graduate school career, becoming a social scientist now feels even HARDER. There are a lot of questions regarding the future of academia and research. I only hope we take time for ourselves and seek support in one another. Take time off! Rest! Relax! Go out with friends! We deserve it!
